The Room Was Already Full Before We Started
Over 50 people showed up within minutes.
From Michigan. From England. From Canada. From Colorado. From across the United States people who are tired, watching the news cycle grind them down, and desperately looking for something that isn’t just another protest sign or petition that disappears into the void.
That’s who came to the IOD Nations live this week. And what unfolded was more than a conversation. It was a movement taking its next step forward.
This Is Your Lived Reality. We Heard You.
Jamie joined from Michigan a swing state bearing the full weight of America’s economic fractures. Her words cut straight to the heart of what millions of Americans feel right now:
“We’re kind of stuck in our own trauma loop of watching these horrible news feeds every single day… Ceasefire has been broken. More lies. More memes being posted by the administration. It’s just chaos.”
She said what a lot of us have quietly concluded: engaging with the noise feeds the machine. Every outrage click is a revenue event for the people causing the outrage. The algorithm was designed to trap you in your own echo chamber, reinforce your fear, and keep you scrolling isolated, overwhelmed, and convinced that one voice can’t change anything.
A participant from Colorado put it even more starkly. She described moments where the intensity of what’s happening in the world becomes almost unbearable — and yet, in the very next breath, that same intensity becomes fuel to act, to organize, to show up in her community. That whiplash is real. You know it. Most Americans living through this moment know it.
The doom loop is a design feature, not a bug. It’s time to build something outside of it.
The Big Idea: We Are Not Accessing the Internet. We ARE the Internet.
IOD Nations founder Joel Komen has been working on this idea for a decade. Here it is, stripped down to its core:
Three foundational premises:
1. If a business no longer requires brick and mortar, then a nation no longer requires land and borders. Amazon built a trillion-dollar marketplace without a single storefront. Nations can be built the same way unified by shared values, not geography.
2. We do not access the internet. We grant the internet access to us. Facebook’s entire business model exists because you show up. Without you, they can’t sell a single ad. Without you, their platform is worthless. You are the commodity. You hold the leverage. It’s time to use it.
3. If you are not actively pro-democracy, you are not pro-democracy. There is no neutral ground. Democracy is either growing or shrinking. Sitting on the sidelines is a vote for the other side.
The Taiwan Proof Point: This Already Works
Skeptical? Fair. Here’s the evidence.
In 2014, Taiwan’s government had a 9% approval rating. Citizens launched the Sunflower Movement and demanded something radical: transparency and direct online participation in government.
They built it. A platform called vTaiwan a real, functioning portal where citizens engage with their national government on a routine basis.
Today, Taiwan’s government sits at a 70% approval rating. Fifty percent of citizens regularly communicate with their government online.
From 9% to 70%. Not through an election. Not through a revolution. Through citizen-led digital integration.
This is not a theory. It is a proven model. And it is exactly what IOD Nations is building not just for one country, but internationally, across communities, across causes, across borders that the internet already ignores.
The Power Flip: From Boycott to Command
Here’s where the strategy gets sharp.
Most boycotts fail. Joel explained why: you get a list of 20 corporations, you feel overwhelmed, you don’t know where to start, and nothing happens. The movement dissipates before it begins.
IOD Nations flips the script.
Imagine the International Online Democratic Women’s Nation a unified, organized, citizen-led entity with its own constitution, its own rules, and millions of members. That nation releases a public statement to 20 major corporations:
Come out publicly. Demand the release of the Epstein files. Commit to pro-democracy principles in your mission statement. You have a choice.
Then they pull one name from the hat. Let’s say it’s Facebook. And the entire Women’s Nation conducts a coordinated, international boycott — until Facebook complies.
The secret isn’t Facebook.
The secret is the other 19 companies watching. They’ve been put on notice. Before the boycott even lands, corporations start asking: what do we need to do to get access to this network?
You’ve stopped going to them. They start coming to you.
Jamie said it plainly: target the companies women actually spend money with. Cosmetics. Clothing. Beauty. Fashion. As she put it “Do you want women to buy from you? Then do you stand with women? Stand with us. Now.”
That is not a protest. That is economic and political power, organized democratically and deployed with precision.
What IOD Nations Is Actually Building
This is not a Substack. This is not a petition site. This is civic infrastructure for the digital age.
The vision, mapped out during this live session, has three operational lanes:
The Education Line — live sessions like this one, explaining the concept, building understanding, recruiting the next wave of citizens
The Action Line — targeted campaigns, coordinated outreach, email campaigns, corporate accountability actions
The Discussion Line — a portal where members propose ideas, vote on priorities, shape collective strategy
Each lane serves a different function. Together, they create something no pro-democracy movement currently has: a plan, a structure, and a strategy that scales.

“This Is Your Brain on Democracy”
The live session also featured two original IOD Nations video productions a signal of where this movement is heading creatively.
The first, “This Is Your Brain on Democracy” a riff on the famous anti-drug PSA captures the urgency and irreverence of what IOD Nations is doing. Draco, IOD Nations’ Agent of Peace and lead creative force, built it around the idea that a brain fully engaged with democracy is exactly what the powers that be are trying to prevent.
The second, a Matrix-inspired piece, delivered the movement’s core message in cinematic terms:
This is our construct. A planet of continents, of land and borders. At least, that’s what previous generations believed. This is our real construct. The trad world is now subservient to our virtual world… We do not access the internet. We filter their access to us. We are the internet.
Fun. Provocative. Unapologetic. That is the house style. Democracy should be offensive not anonymous.
The Influencer Campaign: Reaching Simon Sinek, Trevor Noah, and Stephen Bartlett
The concrete action coming out of this session: a coordinated email campaign targeting three major international influencers.
Simon Sinek — arguably the world’s leading voice on leadership and human behavior has publicly stated three things that would make him happiest: contributing to police reform, disrupting shareholder supremacy and reinventing modern business, and moving the world toward an inspired, safe, and fulfilled future.
IOD Nations connects all three.
Online citizen-led democracy creates the mechanism for community-engaged policing. It creates a democratic marketplace that disrupts shareholder supremacy. And a world where billions of citizens are organized, engaged, and collaborating for freedom is exactly the inspired future Sinek describes.
Trevor Noah and Stephen Bartlett (whose Diary of a CEO podcast has 7 million YouTube subscribers) are also in the crosshairs not because they’re adversaries, but because their reach and their values align with what IOD Nations is building.

The Schopenhauer Moment
A participant who found IOD Nations through one of Draco’s videos closed the session with a philosophical anchor that fits this movement perfectly.
Arthur Schopenhauer: “All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Then it is violently opposed. Then it is accepted as self-evident.”
IOD Nations is in stage one, pushing hard toward stage two. The idea that citizens can unite online as sovereign democratic nations outside of, and alongside, traditional governments sound radical until you look at Taiwan. Until you look at Barcelona. Until you look at Iceland, Switzerland, Ireland, and the Netherlands, all currently exploring digital civic integration.
It is inevitable. The only question is whether it happens fast enough to matter.
What Happens Next And How You Join
The movement is in its grassroots phase. That is not a weakness. That is the moment when showing up costs the least and matters the most.
Here’s what is happening right now:
Workgroup sessions are being scheduled for volunteers. One hour to an hour and a half per week. Video production, proofreading, email campaigns, outreach coordination, social media every skill is needed.
