This Privacy Policy describes how IOD Nations (“the Company,” “We,” “Us,” or “Our”) collects, uses, and discloses information when you use iodnations.org, the IOD Civic Action platform, social.iodnations.org, and related services (together, the “Service”). By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this Privacy Policy.
Depending on how you interact with the Service, we may collect:
Contact information: name, email address, phone number, city/state, submitted through sign-up forms, volunteer intake forms, event registration, or the Civic Action Platform.
Civic Action submissions: the content of petitions, advocacy messages, or civic actions you submit through the Civic Action Platform, along with the timestamp and category of the action.
Community profile information: any bio, photo, posts, or comments you choose to add on social.iodnations.org.
Volunteer and role information: if you sign up to volunteer, the skills, availability, and role preferences you share with our team.
Live session registration: name and email address when you register for or attend our Monday/Wednesday live Zoom sessions.
Payment and subscription information: if you subscribe to an affiliated Substack publication (such as Digital Democracy Watch) or make a payment, that transaction is processed directly by Substack and/or Stripe under their own privacy policies — we do not directly store your card details.
As with most websites, we automatically collect certain data when you visit the Service, including IP address, browser type, pages visited, time spent on pages, and device identifiers.
You may create an account or log in using Google Sign-In. If you do, we receive the basic profile information Google shares under that authorization (such as your name and email address). We do not currently offer, and this Policy does not cover, login via Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), or LinkedIn.
The Civic Action Platform (built on the IOD Nations WordPress REST API) stores the civic actions, petition signatures, or advocacy submissions you make, along with your name and email if you choose to provide them, so we can verify submissions and report on participation.
social.iodnations.org runs on BuddyPress. Information you post there — including your profile, activity updates, group memberships, and messages to other members — may be visible to other members of the community, consistent with the platform’s visibility settings.
When you register for or join our live Zoom sessions, Zoom collects and processes registration and attendance data on our behalf, subject to Zoom’s own privacy practices.
We use cookies and similar technologies (session cookies, persistent cookies, and web beacons) to operate the Website, remember your preferences, and understand how the Service is used. You can control cookies through your browser settings; disabling them may limit some features.
To operate, maintain, and improve the Website, the Civic Action Platform, and the Community Platform.
To send you updates, campaign communications, and civic action alerts by email through our Brevo-managed mailing list.
To register you for and communicate with you about live sessions and events.
To route volunteer sign-ups to the appropriate IOD Nations team member.
To verify and tabulate civic action submissions and petition participation.
To maintain the security of our systems and prevent fraudulent use of accounts.
To comply with legal obligations and enforce our policies.
Where GDPR applies, we process Personal Data on the basis of your consent (e.g., opting in to our mailing list), performance of a contract (e.g., processing a subscription), legal obligation, or our legitimate interests in operating a citizen advocacy platform. You may withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing or contacting us.
We share limited Personal Data with the following categories of Service Providers, strictly to operate the Service on our behalf:
Brevo — manages our transactional and marketing email (sent from hello@iodnations.org) and our subscriber contact list.
Zoom — hosts our live sessions and processes registration/attendance data for those sessions.
WordPress.org / Elementor and our web hosting provider — power iodnations.org and the Civic Action Platform.
Google — provides the optional Google Sign-In authentication used on the Website.
Substack and Stripe — process subscriptions and payments for affiliated publications (e.g., Digital Democracy Watch); these transactions are governed by Substack’s and Stripe’s own privacy policies.
Google Analytics (if enabled) — provides aggregated website traffic analytics.
Each Service Provider is contractually required to use your data only to provide services to us and to keep it confidential.
If IOD Nations is involved in a merger, reorganization, or asset transfer, your Personal Data may be transferred as part of that transaction, and we will notify you before it becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
We may disclose Personal Data if required by law, or in the good-faith belief that disclosure is necessary to comply with a legal obligation, protect the rights or safety of the Company or others, or investigate wrongdoing.
Information you choose to post on social.iodnations.org or in public comments may be visible to other members and the public. Please consider this before sharing sensitive information there.
We retain contact and Civic Action Platform data for as long as needed to operate the Service and pursue our advocacy mission, or until you ask us to delete it. Our Brevo contact list is reviewed periodically and inactive or unsubscribed contacts are removed in line with Brevo’s sending limits and our own list-hygiene practices. Usage Data is generally retained for a shorter period unless needed for security or legal purposes.
We use commercially reasonable measures to protect your Personal Data, including access controls on our WordPress backend and REST API. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
If you are in the EU/EEA, you have the right to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your Personal Data, to object to or restrict our processing, and to withdraw consent at any time. Contact us to exercise these rights, and you may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
California residents have the right to notice, access, correction, deletion, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of Personal Data, and the right to be free from discrimination for exercising these rights. We do not sell Personal Data for money. We do use Service Providers such as Brevo and Google Analytics, which may constitute a “share” under CPRA for advertising/analytics purposes; you may opt out by contacting us at customersupport@iodnations.org.
We collect the following CCPA-defined categories: Identifiers (Category A), California Customer Records data such as name and phone number (Category B), Internet/network activity (Category F), and account login credentials (Category L, sensitive personal information). We do not knowingly collect protected classification data, biometric data, precise geolocation, or health information.
Our Service does not currently respond to browser Do Not Track signals.
The Service is not directed to anyone under 13, and we do not knowingly collect Personal Data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with Personal Data, contact us so we can remove it.
The Service may link to affiliated publications and channels — including the IOD Sports Nation Substack, the Digital Democracy Watch Substack, and our YouTube channel (@iod_nations) — each of which may have its own privacy policy. We encourage you to review those policies, as this Privacy Policy governs iodnations.org, the Civic Action Platform, and social.iodnations.org only.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised policy here and update the “Last Updated” date above, and will provide additional notice by email for material changes.
