The Verdict Is Already In | We Just Haven’t Acted On It
Here is the uncomfortable truth most democracy advocates won’t say out loud:
5.4 billion people are already united online. And they’ve done nothing with it.
Not because they can’t. Not because the tools don’t exist. But because a small group of wealthy, powerful, and strategically brilliant bad actors built an architecture specifically designed to keep them divided scrolling, arguing, exhausted, and convinced that nothing they do individually changes anything.
They don’t need to defeat democracy directly. They just need to keep the water divided into separate drops. Keep each drop convinced it is alone and too small to matter.
That strategy is working. Right now, it is winning.
But it doesn’t have to.
The Most Important Thing Almost Nobody Has Said Clearly
We’ve been told for 30 years that the internet is a set of platforms. That Facebook is a place people go. That YouTube is a service people use. That Google is a tool people search. That the companies behind these platforms are the internet its owners, its architects, its governors.
This is a lie.
Facebook without its users is a server farm hanging in the dark. YouTube without its creators and viewers is empty bandwidth. Google without human-generated content to index is an engine with nothing to search. Twitter, now X without people generating conversations is one man talking to himself.
The water created the value. The pipes claimed ownership of it.
We are the water. And the water was never divided. It was only interrupted.
We do not access the internet. We grant platforms access to us. Without us without our attention, our data, our dollars they are nothing. That is the power we hold and have never organized around.
Taiwan Proved It Already Works
In 2014, Taiwan’s citizens had reached a breaking point. Their government had earned a 9% approval rating. Young people launched what became known as the Sunflower Movement a citizen-led rebellion that demanded the government engage with them digitally, on their terms.
What happened next is one of the most important democratic case studies of the 21st century.
Taiwan built vTaiwan an online citizen-led democratic platform powered in part by Pol.is, enabling open, structured civic participation at scale. The results:
50%+ of Taiwan’s citizens are now registered and actively participating in their online democracy
Government approval ratings climbed from 9% to 70%
A 17-year-old girl submitted a proposal to ban plastic straws through the online portal. Once 5,000 citizens supported it, the government was required to act. Taiwan banned plastic straws because a teenager engaged the system and the people backed her
This isn’t theory. It isn’t aspiration. It happened. It is happening right now.
And Taiwan isn’t alone. Ireland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Munich, and Barcelona are already implementing or actively exploring their own versions of online citizen-led democracy.
The infrastructure exists. The proof of concept is validated. The only missing ingredient is us.
Locke Was Right. Rousseau Was Right. And Then the Internet Changed Everything.
John Locke gave the modern world its democratic foundation: governments derive their legitimacy solely from the consent of the governed not from God, not from hereditary right, but from the people.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau sharpened that blade a generation later. Consent every few years, he argued, was not real consent. Genuine democracy required ongoing participation citizens not merely choosing their governors periodically, but governing continuously.
Then Rousseau admitted what haunted him.
It was impossible. Citizens couldn’t continuously govern themselves at scale. They had jobs, farms, families, distances between them that couldn’t be crossed in time to make things matter. Representative democracy periodic elections, delegated authority was the practical compromise. Not the ideal. The compromise.
He wrote that in 1762.
The internet has dissolved every constraint Rousseau identified.
The distance is gone. The time barrier is gone. The inability to collaborate across communities, across borders, across causes gone. The single greatest weakness of democracy throughout all of human history has been solved by a technology that 5.4 billion people are already using.
We live in the era where Rousseau’s vision is finally achievable. The question is whether we will choose to build it.
The Formula Is Simpler Than Anyone Admits

The strength of every democracy in history has been a function of how many people are united and how well they collaborate. The United States became the world’s leading democratic force because it was one of the largest nations on Earth and for a long time collaborated reasonably well.
That collaboration is fracturing. The numbers are being suppressed by platforms engineered for outrage over solidarity. The result is a democracy that is, right now, shrinking.
But the formula also shows the path forward. You don’t need to fix Washington. You don’t need permission from a party. You don’t need a revolution.
You need numbers. And you need collaboration.
The click of a mouse provides both.
What IOD Nations Is Actually Proposing
IOD Nations is not another platform competing for your attention. It is not another pipe claiming to deserve your flow.
It is a coordinated layer the first serious attempt in human history to let the water recognize itself as an ocean and move with the full, unstoppable weight of what it has always been.
Here is the specific model:

Cause-Based Online Nations Citizens of the world unite around shared causes women’s rights, climate, arts, youth, veterans, LGBTQ+, BIPOC communities forming their own online democratic nations with their own constitutions, bills of rights, and voting systems. This is the IOD Women’s Nation. The IOD Art Nation. The IOD Climate Nation. The IOD Youth Nation.
2. Geography-Based Online Nations In parallel, citizens unite by geography the IOD US Nation, IOD Canada Nation, IOD Ukraine Nation, IOD Greenland Nation operating independently of, but in relationship with, their existing governments.
3. Cross-Nation Collaboration The real power is the intersection. The IOD Art Nation proposes building a citizen-owned music sharing platform that returns the majority of revenue to artists instead of corporations. The IOD Women’s Nation endorses it. The IOD Youth Nation amplifies it. The IOD Climate Nation contributes. Suddenly, the world’s largest democratic music platform exists not built by a corporation, but by citizens who united online.
Spotify has to come to us. Facebook has to come to us. Every platform that wants unfiltered access to pro-democracy citizens has to come to us. And the terms are simple: prove you are pro-democracy or you get filtered access.
Tides don’t petition. They don’t protest. They don’t go home. They simply and continuously move.
The Law of Diffusion of Innovation And Where We Are Right Now
Simon Sinek’s third most-watched TED Talk describes it precisely. The first 2.5% of any population are the innovators. The next 13.5% are the early adopters. Mass market acceptance doesn’t happen until you cross 15–18% market penetration the tipping point.
IOD Nations is not trying to convince everyone. Not yet. The goal right now is to find the innovators and the early adopters the people who hear this and say: I get it. Count me in.
The people in that live session represented exactly that. Suzanne, an NAACP leader from Utah who has been looking for a legitimate way to collaborate. Jamie, a technologist who has worked with musicians to reclaim their economic power. Peter from Montreal, who has seen democracy fail and rebuild throughout his lifetime. Online citizen-led democracy is moving through those stages in real time. Taiwan proved it works. The rest of the world is beginning to implement it. The United States hasn’t started yet. That is the window. That is the moment. That is why this matters right now.
The Ranked Choice Voting Example Proof of Concept at Home
In California’s most recent gubernatorial primary, pro-democracy voters split their support between multiple candidates. The result: a corporate-funded Democrat and a democracy-threatening conservative advanced. Voters who supported the strongest pro-democracy candidate effectively threw their votes away.
With ranked choice voting already in use in some states this doesn’t happen. Your vote cascades to your second choice if your first choice doesn’t advance. No vote is wasted. The will of the actual majority prevails.
If California’s pro-democracy citizens were united online as the IOD California Nation, they could have mobilized a campaign to compel the state legislature to adopt ranked choice voting before that election. The technology to do this exists. The citizens exist. The organization does not yet.
That is what IOD Nations is building.
Pre-Bunking: Taiwan’s Answer to Misinformation And Ours
Taiwan’s Audrey Tang the digital minister who emerged from the Sunflower Movement has deployed two interconnected tools against the propaganda machine:
Pre-bunking: Anticipating disinformation campaigns before they spread, then inoculating the public against them by showing in advance how the attacks will work.
COFAX: A collaborative citizen-led fact-checking network where any citizen can report a rumor into a shared dashboard. An AI layer cross-references incoming rumors against previously debunked content and provides a rapid first-take that informs the citizenry before narratives metastasize.
The result: when disinformation attacks came against Taiwan’s election process, three political parties ideologically opposed all publicly confirmed no rigging had occurred, because citizens had the tools to verify it themselves.
The United States is currently subjected to propaganda, misinformation, and lies at a scale unprecedented in its history. The debunk bot debunkbot.com is already available. The infrastructure exists. What doesn’t exist yet is a million organized US citizens using it together.
That is the IOD US Nation. That is what a unified online democratic nation enables.
The Hard Question | Why Haven’t We Organized Already?
Jamie a technologist and longtime democracy advocate who joined the live session asked the hardest question: We’re already all connected online. Why hasn’t it worked?
Joel’s answer was precise:
The platforms haven’t accidentally failed to organize us. They have deliberately prevented it. The algorithms that power Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube are engineered to maximize engagement which means outrage, division, and emotional exhaustion. A user who is angry, scared, and overwhelmed clicks more. A user who is organized, empowered, and collaborating doesn’t need the platform.
Combine that with targeted distraction sports, gambling, consumer culture and you have a population that is perpetually on the edge of action and perpetually redirected away from it.
We are not failing to organize because we lack the will. We are failing to organize because a multi-trillion-dollar industry has invested in making sure we don’t.
IOD Nations isn’t competing with those platforms for your attention. It is asking you to recognize that you are the product they are selling and to decide, consciously, to redirect your power.
Artists, Musicians, and the Next Wave of Adopters
The IOD Nations team has identified a critical insight from this session: artists and musicians may be the group most primed to adopt and lead this movement.
The reason is structural. Musicians are already living the exploitation model giving their creative work to platforms that capture the vast majority of the economic value. Spotify paid an average of $0.003–0.005 per stream in recent years. The artist gets fractions. The platform keeps the rest.
The IOD Art Nation flips this. Artists unite online, build or adopt a citizen-owned platform, allocate the majority of revenue back to creators, and cross-collaborate with other IOD Nations who amplify and support the platform in exchange for democratic solidarity.
This is not hypothetical. Bono and The Edge recently met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to discuss major civic achievements. Artists are already operating at the intersection of culture and power. IOD Nations gives them the organizational structure to operationalize that power democratically.

The forces of authoritarianism, corporate capture, and algorithmic division understood this perfectly. They built their strategy around preventing the water from recognizing itself as an ocean.
IOD Nations is the counter-strategy. Simple. Proven. Already working in Taiwan. Already spreading to Ireland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and beyond.
The United States the world’s most influential democracy has not started yet. That is the urgency. That is the window.
